Diabetes is a disorder of the way our bodies use food for energy, so it is closely related to digestion. In your stomach and intestines, almost everything you eat is broken down into a sugar called glucose, which is the “fuel” our bodies use in order to function. When food is digested, the glucose passes into the blood. A hormone called insulin then moves the glucose out of the blood and into all the cells of the body, which use this fuel to do their jobs. Normally, when you eat, this process triggers an organ called the pancreas to produce just the right amount of insulin to transport the glucose out of the blood and into the cells.
