Chocolate milk shakes are an old-time classic. So here’s a way to enjoy a classic and be healthy. Bananas provide wholesome sweetness, fiber, and potassium. Carob packs a wallop of color, flavor, and richness, as well as calcium and magnesium for strong muscles and bones. For variety, try freezing these to make frozen fudge sticks. And as difficult as it may be, don’t forget that this is good for you!
2½ cups soy milk or rice milk
3 medium frozen bananas
2 tablespoons carob powder
2 tablespoons flaxseeds, soaked overnight and drained (optional)
½ teaspoon pure vanilla flavor
Combine the milk, bananas, carob powder, flaxseeds, and vanilla in a blender. Blend on high speed for 1–2 minutes or until smooth and creamy. Pour into glasses and serve with straws.
• This recipe should provide you with 12 frozen pops: Pour the shake liquid into twelve ½-cup ice cream pop molds and place the molds in the freezer to set for about 2 hours. Remove the pop molds from the freezer and insert wooden sticks three quarters of the way into the molds, then place them back into the freezer until the entire pop is fully set (at least 2–3 hours).
